Meet Julie
Julie Gammon Levasseur
Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, my creative journey truly began in 1983 when a two-month trip to Israel unexpectedly turned into seven and a half years of life-changing experience. It was there that I met Miriam, a gifted artist who saw something in me I hadn’t yet recognized. She told me, quite matter-of-factly, that watercolor would be my medium.
“Because it’s easy?” I asked.
“No, my dear,” she replied gently, “it’s just what I believe suits you.”
At the time, I hadn’t painted much at all. Though I’m self-taught, I once tried attending a workshop to improve my skills—but left each evening in tears. It was during that season I heard a still, small voice say:
“If I’d wanted you to paint like ‘so-and-so,’ I would have made you him.”
That moment changed everything. Since then, I’ve committed to staying in my own lane—painting from the heart, embracing the quirks, and trusting the process.
Watercolor has become one of my main artistic languages. It’s fluid, unpredictable, and deeply expressive—much like the journey that brought me here. Thank you for joining me in this unfolding story.
My journey with art began in childhood, somewhere around grade two or three. I was five or six years old, already captivated by color and creativity. One day, I rushed downstairs to ask my dad what color a kangaroo’s eyes were. His answer—“purple with orange polka dots”—was exactly the kind of imaginative spark I needed to finish my masterpiece with pride.
By grade eight, I was sketching the Osmond Brothers during math class (a subject I probably should’ve been paying more attention to). I still have those sketches from 1968—a reminder of how art has always been a quiet companion in my life.
For many years, I painted mostly for myself, my family, and a few close friends. Creating was personal, joyful, and often tucked away from public view. But with the encouragement of those closest to me, I’ve decided to share my work more widely.
It’s an honour to invite you into my world of whimsy, storytelling, and imagination. Thank you for being here.
Inspired by the Southwest
Each winter, my husband and I head to Arizona—a place that has deeply stirred my artistic spirit. The Southwest offers a palette unlike any other: wild horses galloping across open plains, sun-drenched adobe buildings, majestic mountains, fiery sunsets, and the unmistakable charm of cowboys, cactus, and roadrunners.
It’s a land rich with texture, movement, and soul. The animals, landscapes, and culture have found their way into my work, shaping both my style and my storytelling.
I’ve been honored to exhibit my art at shows throughout Arizona, sharing pieces that reflect the beauty and energy of this remarkable region. It continues to inspire me with every visit.
God's Creatures
A Heart for Animals
Animals have always held a special place in my heart. Over the years, pet portraits have become a signature part of my artistic journey—each one a unique celebration of the bond between people and their beloved companions.
It’s a true privilege to capture the spirit, personality, and presence of someone’s pet through my art. Every portrait is more than just an image—it’s a tribute, a memory, and a gift.
You can explore some of these heartfelt creations on my God’s Creatures page. I’m honored to share this work with you.
Imagine That!
… I have stumbled upon a new love…my IMAGINE THAT series.
The Imagine That series invites viewers into a world where imagination takes flight—literally. Each painting is a vibrant fusion of watercolors bringing together anthropomorphic characters, fantastical creatures, and dreamlike landscapes into compositions that feel both playful and profound.
Each piece invites you to reimagine the world—fluid, playful, and full of possibility.
Colours swirl with emotion, forming stories that move, delight, and surprise.
Let your imagination take flight.
